There’s two things I missed this week that I would like to have linked to, but because I was frantically cleaning in anticipation of Bitter’s imepnding arrival, I had to cut back on my regular blog reading.

First, Tam has an excellent response to Uncle’s post on serial numbered parts.

Second, Kevin Baker has written a thought provoking piece on education, and how it’s creating more and more kids each generation that look to government to solve our problems.  I agree, but think education is only one prong of the problem.  The drift toward ever bigger government is also largely driven by the people opposing it having better things to do than get involved in government and fix it.  I think there’s also a problem with the cultural notion that everyone has a civic duty to vote.  I think that’s hogwash.  We have no vested interest in people who have only a peripheral understanding of government and politics casting a ballot.  Someone who doesn’t care enough to vote without being guilted into it by MTV, or some other activist group, probably ought not to be voting.

Joe Huffman is going to be giving a presentation about us (the gun blogosphere) and our activities as of late to the Boeing Rifle and Pistol Club.  I’m guessing Boeing makes UAVs, and I’m thinking a great way for Boeing to do blogger outreach is to send us one to evaluate.  Preferably with missiles.  I’m sure I can find someone who has a junk yard who is sympathetic to our evaluating its effectiveness on vehicles.

Looks like Support Your Local Gun Fighter has moved to a new corral.  Looks OK to me.

SayUncle claimed to have a certain video today, that when we clicked on it, we got Rickrolled.

In a carefully crafted bit of revenge, done gun blogosphere style, I have a very embarassing photo of SayUncle taken at the Second Amendment Blogger Bash to share with everyone.

UPDATE: It’s a joke.  It’s not Rick Astley :)

Megan McArdle is questioning whether she wants to get a gun if they become legal in DC.  I would caution that when Heller is ruled on, the fight will just be beginning.  It’ll be a while before DC residents can legally buy firearms, and there aren’t any gun shops in the district yet anyway, unless you want to talk to Josh Sugarmann about running you through the whole 4473 and background check process as soon as the Supremes give the green light.

Despite what a certain anti-gun group, that rhymes with Shady Insane, is advising Megan over on their blog, using statistics that have already been thoroughly debunked.  Of course, with owning a gun comes responsibility, and we know a lot more about that than the Brady Campaign ever will.  Since we’ve seen Megan at the range before with other bloggers, we assume she has people that have the safety education bit taken care of, but there are an entire bevy of gun bloggers who are ready to help, if need be.  Some of us are even certified instructors.

Kit and John have gotten married, and someone actually liveblogged the wedding.

I played around for a bit and finally came up with something I could live with.  You may have to hit shift-refresh to have it load the new graphic.  Of course, if you think you can come up with something better, feel free to give it a try.  If I get multiple entries that I like, I might just rotate banners occasionally.  I wasn’t able to incorporate a firearm in any way I liked, so I decided to leave it out.

Let me know what you think

My graphics arts skills leave a lot to be desired.  But after thinking a bit about what I wanted, I came up with an idea for a new banner, but I’m not sure I really like it.  One of the things I’m trying to achieve is to tie the gun issue in with the graphic, and in with the blog’s title.  I originally picked the title of the blog because I was resistant to starting my own blog, despite people telling me I should.  So when I started one, it was the proverbial cold day in hell, after my long insistence I had better things to do.

Here’s what I was working on.  Let me know what you think.  You can tell me it sucks, since I’ll probably agree with you.  Anyone is welcome to come up with something better, and if I like it, I’ll owe you some beer.

I was talking to Dave Kopel at the Annual Meeting about the fact that my headlining banner is getting long in the tooth.  I tend to agree.  Truth be told, if I could go back, I would probably change the name of the blog too, but it’s too late for that.  I never thought anyone would actually take this seriously.

So I’m going to have a contest to see if anyone can submit a headline banner close to what I’m looking for.  I am looking for a drawing, rather than a picture, but my idea is an AR-15, with a muzzle flash (rather embellished flash) and a snowflake in the flash.  If anyone wants to have a stab at it, send the graphic to my address listed in the top corner.  Click on the graphic to make it readable.

Over at The Arizona Rifleman.  Just keep scrolling.  Next year’s NRA Annual Meeting, and Second Amendment Blogger Bash will be in Phoenix, so hopefully this will end up being an attending blog at next year’s event.

Well, that was my first national radio apperance.  Hopefully I did OK!  Anyway, for those of you looking for the post that was alluded to on the show, you can click here.  Tonight Bitter and I will be preparing to head to Louisville, and tomorrow we head out.  Posting might be light tomorrow.

UPDATE: Apparently John Popp got his Sebastians confused.

The Arizona Rifleman.  I remember Heypete from when I used to spend time on LiveJournal’s guns community.  He always seemed like a sensible guy.

We’ve been experiencing too many outages lately, largely due to one of the drives in the server acting up.  This is something I need to remedy, but I’m thinking maybe it’s time to remedy it with a new server for the blog.  I’m looking at getting the parts in to do it.

Congratulations to Tam for getting a cool writing gig!  She’s writing for Low End Mac.  My first Mac was a IIsi in 1992.  I soon realized “This is a lot better than Windows 3.1″ and used it pretty exclusively, even though I wonder how I ever lived with a 12″ display.  Later upgraded to a IIci with a larger 14″ display.  Briefly used a NeXT cube, until the novelty wore off and I realized it was nice to have software.  I actually skipped the whole PowerPC generation, using Linux pretty exlusively during that time, until I bought my MacBook a year and a half ago and thought “This is a lot better than Linux.”  Granted, I still use Linux for serving the blog and for a DVR, but not for desktop work.  There will be no going back to the world of Windows for me.

Ace, who’s been going around interviewing gun bloggers, interviews Bitter.

According to Google Analytics, which I had apparently not noticed was broken by the theme changeover, this blog has approximately 14,000 regular readers.  This is based off loyaltry trends that show the number of people who have visited at least 26 times in the past 3 months is roughly that number.  Whether you come here directly, or get sent here thorugh someone else, thank you.

Of course, this is assuming I’m calculating things correctly, which depends on understanding google’s terms for visitor and visit, and google using their own terms properly.

Featuring one of our blog community members who might be familiar to many.  See the full set of posts on the topic here.  The media is starting to take gun bloggers seriously!

UPDATE: At the end of the day, my hat’s off to David.  I think he did a fine job of representing our side.

Chicks and guns.  And speaking of Geocaching, I think that’s one thing I’ve never done with Bitter.  The weather is getting warm, and I desperately need the exercise.

Using writing from bloggers without permission in a commercial promotion?  Not cool.  I have a training certificate from Front Sight that I have no intention of using.  A little more than a year ago they were offering them to bloggers in exchange for setting up some links, and I bit without doing any research.  Since then I’ve uncovered a lot of very negative information about Front Sight, which is making me ponder returning the certificate, with a letter explaining that I no longer want to participate in this scam.

Bitter has her list of blogging hotties, so I’m allowed to have mine, dammit!  Here’s my top five.

  • Breda - Who says librarians can’t be hot?  Gun toting librarians, even hotter!
  • Kit - John is a lucky, lucky man.  Just click on the site to see what I mean.  Yeah, the AR-15 is nice too.
  • Dr. Helen - As charming and intelligent as she is beautiful.  Glenn is also a lucky guy!
  • Megan McArdle - I like smart women, and tall women, and she’s both!
  • Bitter - I don’t care what the gun control people say, boobs with guns are a great combination.

It’s been my careful observation that the conservative/libertarian side of the blogosphere has better looking women than the lefty blogosphere.

Caleb has been doing a lot of podcasts.  I have a personality that is really best suited to the written word, but I’ve been thinking about doing one just to see how it goes.  It wouldn’t be a regular feature.  What do you think of podcasts?

Of course, I’d have to think of a topic too.  I wouldn’t want to bore anyone.
