I think if the group is coming to you as a PR stunt (and they are if they are pretending to be nice), then a meeting doesn't hurt. Be firm, be clear, and steer the conversation to issues in the criminal system and community service concerns. I think if you basically tell them to go screw themselves by rudely refusing to talk, you set yourself up to become the next major target by political adversaries. Not that they won't eventually come after you, but it's much easier to play the PR game if you can say you had a meeting and tried to discuss the real issues. You're never going to get a completely fair shake, but at that point, you can set yourself up to defend yourself in the PR world.
