Eric Holder to Head Up DOJ

Kurt Hoffman notes Obama’s pick for the Department of Justice. This is the position that will most affect gun owners, and his stance on gun rights doesn’t look good. I will say, however, that if Mr. Holder can prevent his department from burning down houses with children in it, murdering women and children with sniper fire, or pointing submachine guns at 6 year olds, his record will at least be better than his Democratic predecessor. I will hope that he adopts Obama’s “Yes we can!” attitude in terms of trying to achieve that particular goal. Come to think of it, it wouldn’t really be that hard to top the performance of the last Republican occupant of that office either. I would hope Mr. Holder can agree with us that these are realistic, and achievable goals.
UPDATE: Someone points out that Ruby Ridge was at the end of the Bush I presidency, and that would seem to be correct. But I would note that it doesn’t appear Janet Reno did much housecleaning to get rid of the people who concocted the unlawful rules of engagement.

with all the existing gun laws on the books, why is there a need for more laws? enforcement of existing laws would keep guns out of criminals hands. new gun laws would be ignored by criminals just like they ignore existing gun laws. so why are the democrats always pushing new gun laws? the only reason must be to disarm the law bidding citizens. by definition, law bidding people would give up their guns while the criminals, by definition would not obey any new gun laws. hummmmmm. just like england. hummmmm.
or maybe there is a more sinister reason, genocide. think about it.
evil men have always disarmed the citizens, professing to keep them safe. then murdering millions, like hitler, stalin and many others.
“make ‘em pry the guns from you cold dead hands” as a wise man once said.

Ruby Ridge occurred under Bush 41’s watch, not Clinton’s.

Doh! You’re right Justin. I had thought it was early Clinton. I was 18 in 1992, so my memory of that time is a bit fuzzy.

Indeed it did. But just to make everyone feel better, the decision not to prosecute Lon Horiuchi happened under Clinton. That decision was made by one Deval Patrick, now Governor of Massachusetts. And, according to the inside talk, President-elect Obama’s #1 choice for the next US Supreme Court vacancy.

[...] Sebastian points out that Eric Holder has been tapped by Obama to head up the Department of Justice. As mentioned, the Attorney General is the cabinet level position that has the most direct impact on gun owners by virtue of directing the path and enforcement actions of the BATFE as part of the Department of Justice. Eric Holder was Clinton’s, and Reno’s, Deputy Attorney General from 1997 on. So, after Waco and the Ruby Ridge aftermath, but in fact involved in the Elian Gonzalez fiasco.
Magic Eight Ball is not optimistic. The only “lesson learned” that the justice department has ever given any public indication of is that these situations are best avoided because they are bad for public relations, despite the .gov clearly being in the right. Hopefully Holder has learned that lesson, if nothing else.

In fact i believe Lon Horiuchi later ended up an instructor at the FBI academy!
