Zbigniew Brzezinski: Fundamentally at stake is what kind of role Russia will play in the new international system. Unfortunately, Putin is putting Russia on a course that is ominously similar to Stalin’s and Hitler’s in the late 1930s. Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt has correctly drawn an analogy between Putin’s “justification” for dismembering Georgia — because of the Russians in South Ossetia — to Hitler’s tactics vis a vis Czechoslovakia to “free” the Sudeten Deutsch.

Let’s hope we don’t have to repeat that sorry bit of history.  We need a comprehensive missile defense system.  We need it yesterday.  It makes this all the more troubling:

    Has anyone even recently proposed putting weapons in space? I know that was an issue some years ago, but treaties and the end of the Cold War took care of it.

    Oh yes, the US Air Force is still working on that, the Pentagon is still planning with that assumption, and that will be implemented no matter who gets the keys to the Oval Office next January.

    “Missile Defense” is a taxpayer boondoggle–always was, always will be. Who’s it aimed at, Russia? They’ll just expand their arsenal to overwhelm the defense–presto, new arms race. Rogue states? Missiles are the LEAST likely delivery method for a nuclear device from them; If MADD worked for the USSR, it’ll work for “rogue states”. Shoot one missile at us, and we will nuke your pissant country back to the stone age.

    Actually, I meant “nuclear weapons”. Conventional space-based weapons are a different matter.

    Anyway, I meant space-based nuclear weapons. Conventional weapons are okay to develop and use.
