iPhone 3G

So I’m thinking about getting an iPhone 3G tomorrow. Why drink the kool aid when you can chug it?
UPDATE: No iPhone for me. I went to the AT&T store at lunch, and they told me they had sold out of them before 9:00 this morning. I did, however, reserve one. I should have an iPhone in a week’s time.

Go on be that guy, Ahab is just jealous because he got a new phone about a month ago and won’t be getting an iPhone. I, on the other hand, will be getting one.

If you’re one of those unfortunates who don’t have a 1st gen iPhone then you should run to the store and get one. If you already have an iPhone, then there’s no reason to rush out and buy one because you get 99% of the 2nd gen goodness by upgrading the firmware to 2.0. AT&T’s 3g blows and the GPS doesn’t do turn by turn.
I’ve been playing with the 2.0 firmware since yesterday. Daughter loves Super Monkey Ball. I haven’t seen a new killer app yet, but it’s still early.

I hear the firmware has already been cracked. does that mean i can get one and use verizon? i just don’t want AT&T.

iPhone is GSM only. Verizon is CDMA, so no iPhone for Verizon or Sprint.
If you crack your iPhone you CAN use it on any GSM carrier.

GSM is the cell communications standard that AT&T, T-Mobile and most all carriers in Europe use . CDMA is a competing standard used by Verizon and Sprint in the US. GSM and CDMA aren’t compatible so a phone designed for the AT&T network can’t be used on the Verizon network.

GSM = Global System for Mobile. It’s the standard in most of the world for cellular phone service. The other competing standard is CDMA is Code Division Multiplex Access, which is the most common protocol in North America.
Truth be told, CDMA is superior to GSM, but GSM sees more world wide use. A phone which speaks CDMA won’t talk to a GSM network, and vica versa. Sprint and Verizon are CDMA carriers. T-Mobile (really Deutche Telekom) and AT&T Wireless are both GSM service providers.

My experience with a single iPod (and thus iTunes, and, eventually, an Apple Store) has been enough to convince me to steer clear of any Mac product for a while.
The iPhone is assuredly shiny, but… blech.

I’ve been a Mac user for years. I had one iPod go tits up, but it was covered under the applecare warranty. I generally find those to be worth it for hardware you carry around with you.

Long ago I swore a blood oath to never buy Apple, but the 3G iPhone has me vaccilating. I won’t be able to chug the Kool-Aid until September-ish, when my contract with Verizon expires, but all the same…

To be fair, the iPod going all pissy with my PC was only part of my eventual distaste for Apple… the rest (and possibly the majority) probably stemmed from the “tech support” at the Apple store, which basically amounted to, “Buy a Mac.”
Me, I file Apple with Glock - probably decent products, but their fanboys have scared me off.

If you have verizon or sprint, check out the windows mobile PDAs. The interface is almost as good, possibly better, and as with all mac vs windows choices, you get more powerful hardware for your buck.
