While the Albany Times Union is busy suggesting New York State is about to mandate lasers, New South Wales is busy talking about banning them.

Can’t ban lasers. I use a laser tape measure in my job duties measuring houses. Idiots, I tell ya.

You can actually build high output(200mw) lasers fairly cheap if you’re handy with a soldering iron, using laser diodes meant for use in DVD burners. You can buy the diodes new from a supply house for about $20(Future Electronics and Digikey both stock Sharp Micro’s version with “Call for Price” on em, only Digikey has the output listed wrong)

Whoops found a mistake, that Sharp Diode is for a bluray apps and is 200mw peak. Continous is in fact, “only” 105mw(still a fairly hefty output).
Stonetek, in the meantime, sells DVD burner diodes, specifically the Sony SLD1239JL which suppposedly can be driven as high as 240mw, and cost $20.
