To get 1994, we had to go through 1993. No thanks. 1994 and the contract with america wasn't worth 1993... (or the rest of the '90s).

I don't feel like particpating in a tactical retreat this year, politically.

Uh Huh! I remember, and now we have candidates who in their entirety support just exactly that, whatever party.

I think I prefer gridlock.

Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better. Maybe it will be good to let the Dems screw things up for a term or two and we can have a backlash.

If a D wins the R's can be expected to fight them. If an R wins we will end up with one who is really a D and will give them everything they want. The R's will go along to show unity with their president.

Neither situation is good for the country, but I can a D win being less harmful than an R win, at the moment.

Now, if you will excuse me, I shall go outside and smash my typing finger with a splitting maul for saying that.

I haven't decided yet, but considering how much Hillary & Obama scare me I'll probably end up voting for whoever the Republican's end up with.

The problem isn't so much McCain, it's the "brand" associated with Bush. He's become so polarizing, and so unpopular that any running Republican has a tainted brand at the moment. Add to that that McCain seems to be a "barely palatable" one leaves Republican candidates on the short end of the stick.

I think Hillary as president will be just as polarizing (and bad for the Republic, as you say) as Bush has been. Obama only slightly less so, but really just as bad. But I do fear that ANY president, on either side, will continue on with damaging policies using precedents set by Bush. Things like signing statements (OK, you passed a law, but it doesn't apply to me). Habeas Corpus. Some parts of FISA, PATRIOT, accusing anyone who disagrees of treason.

By allowing Bush (or maybe not standing up to him either Congressionally or Socially), we are handing a lot of bad things off to someone like Hillary OR McCain; neither of whom do I believe will fail to use those precedents to their own designs or agendas.

I think we (the grand royal we), have only ourselves to blame. I'm not standing around saying that Bush is the worst president ever. But the things our society let him do (for good OR ill), have already damaged the Republic. That allowance will only be continued by the next person up.
